The family must be patient in waiting Free Essays

Addiction is a grave dilemma that cannot be ignored. The more the addiction is denied, the more problem it poses not only to the addict but to the family as well. Counselling is one possible solution on how to approach problems such as addiction. We will write a custom essay sample on The family must be patient in waiting or any similar topic only for you Order Now However, in counselling, patience is needed. The family must be patient in waiting for the slow but sure change that comes with counselling and also patience for the addicted family member. It will take some time for counselling to take effect and it is a continuous process. Counselling is defined collectively as a process of exploring an individual’s life that pertains to the problems causing emotional pain or frustrations while focusing on improving his or her psychological well-being in such a way that the client will be able to reach their full potential after the program. An alcohol and drug counsellor deals with the issues that could have caused the addiction for the individual. Before the actual counselling begins, the counsellor has to be able to gather apt and suffice data and information regarding the past and the present condition of the individual that needs counselling. Assessment or getting the basis data from the client for treatment is one of the methods used in counselling. Upon entry into the program, a safe and trusting environment has to be established and then determining the problem to be worked on follows. In determination of this problem, counselling has to involve assessment. Assessment involves gathering pertinent information and data about the client. Some methods that counsellors use for assessment include qualitative techniques, testing, behavioural evaluation and checking of past records, among many others. The data gathered by the counsellor is then interpreted to be able to formulate a hypothesis or a diagnosis regarding the client’s condition. However, assessment is not just a one-time affair. Assessment should be progressive and all through out the program to ensure that there has been an improvement in the client. Because counselling is continuous, so is the assessing of the client. This can be of help to the treatment because whatever the client is feeling as of the moment may change throughout the course of the counselling. The objectives that the client has agreed to meet upon today may have to be changed as the days go by either because of progress or by retreat. In addition, there might be new problems that emerged as a result of the few therapeutic sessions that took place already or there might be fewer problems than when the first assessment occurred. As aforementioned, the assessment of the client can also be used as a basis for progress. Another helpful tool in assessing the client is collecting and examining the client’s past records. This is because when only the client is interview and assessed, he or she may not be aware of the past problems or issues that he or she was suffering from and in turn may hide this from the present counselling. In addition, these records may be able to assist the current counsellor on what the previous treatments done to the client were not able to work, so that the counsellor would not invest time and effort in it. In addiction counselling, the vital assessment tools that are to be conducted on a regular basis are the urinalysis and breath analyzer tests, in addition to the self-reports addictive behaviour. The Addiction Severity Index or the ASI, is an interview that quantifies the seven addiction-related areas which are drug and alcohol use, medical, family/social, psychiatric, legal, and employment/support troubles. As soon as the counsellor has figured out what his actions or plans are, the client can now be engaged in the program. It is important that the counsellor and the client have some sort of contract or even a verbal agreement on what they both plan to achieve at the end of the treatment program. By doing so, the commitment and the expectations are both laid out in the open. Once the goal has been identified and the client and counsellor agreement is committed into achieving it or least trying to, an exploration process is started upon by the counsellor. The counsellor will explore on the different approaches that he or she can take to attack the problem presented in front of him or her. There are a lot of solutions and interventions that the counsellor can implement but he or she should be careful in choosing it. The factors that he or she should consider would be the ones that he or she was able to find out from the previous assessment that he or she made. Sometimes, to get a second opinion, the counsellor can also seek for a brainstorming session with his or her colleagues, albeit the identity of the client is not freely shared for confidentiality purposes. When the exploration process is done and the counsellor has devised an approach on the problem, he can now choose from the solutions on hand. However, choosing one method or one solution now does not mean that he cannot alter this in the process. Tweaking the approach per client’s need may be necessary, but it will always be the call of the counsellor to do such a move. How to cite The family must be patient in waiting, Essays

How Electricity Works Essay Sample free essay sample

Electricity is a signifier of energy. Electricity is the flow of negatrons. All affair is made up of atoms. and an atom has a centre. called a karyon. The karyon contains positively charged atoms called protons and uncharged atoms called neutrons. The karyon of an atom is surrounded by negatively charged atoms called negatrons. The negative charge of an negatron is equal to the positive charge of a proton. and the figure of negatrons in an atom is normally equal to the figure of protons. When the equilibrating force between protons and negatrons is upset by an outside force. an atom may derive or lose an negatron. When negatrons are â€Å"lost† from an atom. the free motion of these negatrons constitutes an electric current. Electricity is a basic portion of nature and it is one of our most widely used signifiers of energy. We get electricity. which is a secondary energy beginning. Many metropoliss and towns were built aboard waterfalls ( a primary beginning of mechanical energy ) that turned H2O wheels to execute work. Before electricity coevals began somewhat over 100 old ages ago. houses were lit with kerosine lamps. nutrient was cooled in refrigerators. and suites were warmed by wood-fired or coal-fired ranges. Get downing with Benjamin Franklin’s experiment with a kite one stormy dark in Philadelphia. the rules of electricity bit by bit became understood. In the mid-1800s. everyone’s life changed with the inventionof the electric visible radiation bulb. Prior to 1879. electricity had been used in arc visible radiations for out-of-door lighting. The lightbulb’s innovation used electricity to convey indoor illuming to our places. To work out the job of directing electricity over long distances. George Westinghouse developed a device called a transformer. The transformer allowed electricity to be expeditiously transmitted over long distances. This made it possible to provide electricity to places and concerns located far from the electric generating works. Despite its great importance in our day-to-day lives. most of us seldom stop to believe what life would be like without electricity. Yet like air and H2O. we tend to take electricity for granted. Everyday. we use electricity to make many maps for us — from illuming and heating/cooling our places. to being the power beginning for telecastings and computing machines. Electricity is a governable and convenient signifier of energy used in the applications of heat. visible radiation and power. An electric public-service corporation power station uses either a turbine. engine. H2O wheel. or other similar machine to drive an electric generator or a device that converts mechanical or chemical energy to electricity. Steam turbines. internal-combustion engines. gas burning turbines. H2O turbines. and wind turbines are the most common methods to bring forth electricity. Most of the electricity in the United States is produced in steam turbines. A turbine converts the kinetic energy of a traveling fluid ( liquid or gas ) to mechanical energy. Steam turbines have a series of blades mounted on a shaft against which steam is forced. therefore revolving the shaft connected to the generator. In a fossil-fueled steam turbine. the fuel is burned in a furnace to heat H2O in a boiler to bring forth steam. Coal. crude oil ( oil ) . and natural gas are burned in big furnaces to heat H2O to do steam that in bend pushes on the blades of a turbine. Today. the United States ( U. S. ) electric power industry is organized to guarantee that an equal supply of electricity is available to run into all demand demands at any given blink of an eye. An electric generator is a device for change overing mechanical energy into electrical energy. The procedure is based on the relationship between magnetic attraction and electricity. When a wire or any other electrically conductive stuff moves across a magnetic field. an electric current occurs in the wire. The big generators used by the electric public-service corporation industry have a stationary music director. A magnet attached to the terminal of a rotating shaft is positioned inside a stationary conducting ring that is wrapped with a long. uninterrupted piece of wire. When the magnet rotates. it induces a little electric current in each subdivision of wire as it passes. Each subdivision of wire constitutes a little. separate electric music director. All the little currents of single sub divisions add up to one current of considerable size. This current is what is used for electric power.

Reformations Of School Essay Example For Students

Reformations Of School Essay Education plays a fundamental role in the development of any nation. History is witness that those nations who did not recognized the importance of education were doomed, and education played a key role in the success of the developed nations. A successful country like America faces many challenges regarding education. Some of these challenges are: how to better achieve educational opportunity, and to find ways to deal with such problems and educational dilemmas for American children. To find the answers and solutions to these problems we can not ignore the dialogue of reforming of schools, instead, new ways of education, restructuring of American schools, and recommendations to improve might be the only answer to these problems. In the following paragraphs, problems like weak curriculum and poor standards in the schools have been identified, and recommendations have been made to eliminate these problems. Also the problems and errors regarding the distribution of funds by the government for the schools have been addressed, and recommendations have been made that these funding should be distributed equally and accordingly to the states. The federal government should take this issue more seriously and assist the states on a greater level. It is a very sad fact that even now when we have entered the 21st century, a first world country like America which is supposed to be a role model for the rest of the world is facing the problem of poor standards in their schools such as goals, expectations, and requirements. There is a great contradiction on peoples standards vs. the schools standards. People set high standards that are very hard and sometimes impossible to achieve by students and teachers, whereas some schools do not match these standards and even pass kids who cannot read or have poor educational skills. In order to have high academic standards there has to be high performance in public education systems. The system needs to be changed fundamentally. Teachers can play an important role and should come together on a common platform to achieve a common goal and that is the improved quality of education. Good communication between school, school boards, and school administration is very important, so teachers can be heard and listened to. School should only hire highly qualified and proficient teachers. Students are usually introduced to a weak curriculum, most of the times they end up taking nonacademic courses than academic. School days are very short and because of poor standard in teaching students lack the opportunity to learn material in efficient ways. Some of the recommendations to make the system more efficient are to increase the number of days in school year, students should be allowed to take special courses and they should not be restricted to stay in general educational programs only. To make the curriculum strong it should include the maximum number of required academic courses. The requirements have to be very content. There has to be tougher disciple and smaller classes in order to eliminate the problem. Policies and programs should be controlled, and counselors should have to have control over curriculum, and how the teaching occurs. Other recommendations to improve education include strong leadership by principals of school. Along with the teachers proficiency in the area of teaching, there has to be staff harmony. To motivate teachers toward these changes, their school life style has to be upgraded too. Teachers should have their own office their own phones and better working conditions and attractive salaries. State should get greatly involved in the public education as well. Graduation requirements for students should be set by the state, and local districts should also have the ability to control schools. Local counselors should be given more authority and they should be authorized to hire or fire principals. Parents with low incomes who are unable to give their children basic school education should be assisted financially, and children should have more freedom to communicate and interact with teachers. Groups in the school should be more flexible depending on the students abilities. House On Mango Street 2 EssayThe same teachers should stay with a group of students for two or three years so they have a better chance to learn the weaknesses and strengths of the students, and it is easy for them to help the students along the way. Middle schools should be in the separate buildings. Efficient high schools should be encouraged and assisted in their efforts whereas the ones who are doing poor as far as standards are concerned should be shutdown. All the mentioned recommendations of high standards, comes the high prices. Financial issues cannot be ignored in the real world. All these reforms and the implementations of new ways of educations are possible if the financial obstacles are taken care of. Currently funding for schools comes from three different sources: it comes from districts, state, and federal government. 40% to 60% comes from district or property taxes, 60% to 40 % comes from state taxes, and 5% to 15% comes from federal taxes. In some states there is five times as much spending on students in some school districts as in others $15,744 versus $2,932 during 1994-95 in Illinois, for example by Patricia Albjerg Graham, article#1. If we observe the above data, it is very noticeable that federal government is playing a less active role in financing the education. One way to provide high quality of education is that federal government should get more involve with the current schooling system. Parents in general public can play their part and instead of criticizing the present system, they should elect the candidates in the government who give higher priority for the education and reserve more funds for the improvement and reforming of the school systems.

Export to World

In art, formalism describes the concept that the artistic merit of a work of art is completely established by its form, its medium, and its visual characteristics[1]. Formalism stresses on the elements of the works of art that include shape, color, texture and line while avoiding concepts of realism such as content and context. In the modern world, visual art has been very prominent.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Export to World specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In visual art, formalism denotes a concept that puts forwards that everything required to understand a work of art is enclosed inside the work of art. Formalism is a method of understanding a work of art that reduces the importance of context in a work of art. In this paper, I intend to look at the Export to world project displayed at the Museum of Modern Arts (MoMA) in New York City and located in Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria. Formalism in the moder n world has taken a huge leap and focuses on bringing virtual art and object into the real world. Unlike modeling natural objects that utilizes common paths and well-known tools, export to world shows that modeling man-made phenomena can be engaging and quite interesting. Export to the world is an artistic project that seeks to copy virtual objects from second life and export them to real world by converting them into paper craft models[2]. The project was created on behalf of Ars Electronica by Linda Kostowski and Sascha Pohflepp. Export to world aims at investigating the unclear separation between the virtual world and the real world. The project tries to bring to life the design and production of virtual objects into the real world for observation. In export to world, the form of the virtual object is of the main importance. At the shop in Ars Electronica in Linz, buyers can buy purchased or custom-made virtual objects that are exact replicas to those in the second life market. T hese real life representations of virtual merchandise are exact copies that even contain the flaws inherent in copying. When a buyer purchases a virtual object in Export to world, he is given a two dimensional paper representation of the virtual object which he can physically fit to form a three dimensional real life object on site[3]. In export to world, the real life object is usually forced to correspond point to point to the virtual object. The prominent examples used in Export to world are the Bubble gum machine and the television set.Advertising Looking for essay on art and design? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The bubble gum machine in second life contains several objects that are joined to form the final virtual merchandise. The most prominent section is the bubble gum glass container. In Export to world, this container is represented as a sphere embedded with several colors such as orange, yellow, red and blue. Thes e colors give the illusion that the sphere is filled with bubble gum. The sphere is covered on the top by a red plate like object. The plate is not smooth but has rough edges common in most low pixel 3-D pictures. Beneath the sphere is a black vase that is connected to a stand that contains a grey rod fitted to a cylindrical base. All these aspects are transferred into the real world in the Ars Electronica shop. A buyer is provided with a paper representation of the object that can be fitted to form an accurate copy of the virtual object. The â€Å"Export to World† project is a fine example that demonstrates the veil between virtual representation and reality is becoming smaller and smaller. In the past, artistic were trying to represent real objects in the virtual world. Modern formalism has changed this and at the moment virtual art and objects are being copied and represented in the real world. Bibliography Bartholl, Aram. â€Å"Second City.† Ars Electronica. 2007. How do general anaesthetics cause loss of consciousness Essay

How do general anaesthetics cause loss of consciousness - Essay Example Usually, the general anaesthetics are used during long surgical operations that are also very painful. For example, during hysterectomy, hernia repairs, removal of gall bladder and more (Perry 2010, p. 67). Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is one the research conducted in search for the effects of anaesthetics in humans. The PET study covers the activity of both inhibitory and excitatory neurons that describe the conscious states of mind (Alkire, Haier and Fallon 2000, p. 371). Other studies have identified that general anaesthetics affects the thalamus, cerebellum, midbrain reticular formation, occipital cortex and basal forebrain. Research has revealed that the anaesthetics suppress the thalamocortical circuits, which interfere with the transfer of signals across the neural networks (Squire 1996, p. 114). These agents thalamocortically suppresses the regions of the brain differently although some theories tend to assume that the agents affect the entire brain, mostly focusing on the midbrain reticular formation and thalamus. The general anaesthetics do not affect the brain activities the same way. They affect different regions of the brain thus producing different states of unconsciousness. While humans are asleep, the flow of blood in the thalamus reduces, which means low metabolic rates which lead to unconsciousness. On another hand, anaesthesia involves artificial suppression of the metabolism processes in the thalamus, which make human beings unconscious, as well. In their PET studies, Dr.Alkire, Fallon and Haier used 11 unconscious brains and 11 conscious brains. They used two anaesthetic agents, which include the isoflurane and the halo-thane. They recorded the regional uptakes of fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) in each human brain of the subjects of the study. Then, they compared FDG uptake patterns of the unconscious subjects with the conscious subjects(Alkire, Haier and Fallon 2000, p.

Celebrity endorsement in the women's fragrance market and its effect Essay

Celebrity endorsement in the women's fragrance market and its effect on the UK consumer behaviour - Essay Example This is the null hypothesis proposed and the findings from the study would prove whether or not it is valid. If it is not, the alternative hypothesis would prove to be true, i.e., celebrity endorsement does not influence consumer behaviour positively in favour of the products. The birth of the modern perfumery industry occurred during the colonial era, when the riches and wealth accumulated by the European countries from their colonies enabled the maintenance of the perfect economic climate for the development of perfumes using the technique of enfleurage (www.perfume2000.com). The first perfume was produced in 1882, known as â€Å"fougere royale† using the process of enfleurage. This process uses purified fats in a process similar to maceration which produces pomades that are washed with alcohol, and it produces the finest oils possible. While the fragrance industry is a 25 billion dollar industry, it is one of the poorest performing sectors in the cosmetic industry. Although it would initially appear that the women’s fragrance market is very successful because there are so many new fragrances being launched every year, i.e., about 300 approximately, the reality is that only a few of those fragrances are well received and survive long enough to extend production into another year (Business Wire, 2007). On the other hand, there are some perfumes which have a long standing reputation and customers are very loyal to particular brands. One significant example of this is the Chanel group of perfumes and especially Chanel no: 5, which has been popular among women for many decades. This holds good despite the fact that celebrity endorsement of perfumes can be expensive; for instance the advertisement for Chanel no: 5 using Nicole Kidman cost  £18 million for use over a duration of five years (www.fashion-era.com). There are two approaches to consumer behavior. The
